Lanzhou Metro is a rapid transit system under construction in Lanzhou, Gansu. The vision for the Lanzhou Metro includes three metro lines totaling 90 kilometers (56 mi), and a three-line, 117-kilometer (73 mi) suburban rail network, in the completed regional rapid transit network.[2] Due to the nature of the layout of Lanzhou, most of the urban rail network will run east-west in line with the Yellow River, with most of the network being south of the river and just a few future expansions across to the north of the river. A total of six lines is proposed, of which three will connect the main urban centre with regional destinations Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, Yuzhong county and Gaolan county.[2]

The first two lines will cost about 23 billion yuan ($3.6 billion) and be completed by 2020.[3]

Line 1

Line 1 started construction on July 9, 2012. Line 1 is 26.78 kilometers (16.6 mi) with 20 stations.[4] The line is completely underground with a completion deadline of 2017.[2] The operating speed will be 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph).[5]

On 22 October 2015, a fire broke out at the construction site of Donggang station. No casualties were reported by authorities.[6]

Rolling stock

In October 2016, the first two metro trains were delivered, but services have not started yet. Services will be done by 26 EMUs with a capacity of 2460 passengers each.[7] Each set is 139.98 metres (459.3 ft) long, 3.09 metres (10.1 ft) wide and 3.8 metres (12 ft) high. The rolling stock is manufactured in Changchun by China's CRRC.[5][8] The train sets are developed to be able to withstand sand storms, and feature aluminium bodywork with sand resistant paint, sand resistant glass, and the ventilation system is designed to handle large amounts of dust in the air.[9][10]

Stations

Line 2

Line 2 starts construction at the end of 2015.[11] Built in phases, the first phase is 9.06 kilometers (5.6 mi) with 9 stations, 5 of which will be transfer stations. It will run from Dongfanghong Square to Yanbei Road, all within Chengguan district.
