Note for consistency, the
Airports Council International's (ACI) annual figures are always used in the final presentation and ranking, even where figures given by airport operators or authorities differ.
The world's busiest airports by passenger traffic are measured by total passengers (data from Airports Council International), defined as passengers enplaned plus passengers deplaned plus direct-transit passengers. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been the world's busiest airport every year since 2000; with all airports combined London has the world's busiest city airport system by passenger count. As of 2015, only two countries have more than one airport in the top 30: the United States has twelve, while China has four, including Hong Kong International Airport in its Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The rankings have changed considerably since 2000, with some airports showing dramatic growth during that period, while others that are near capacity have roughly the same number of passengers in 2015 that they did in 2000. For example, Beijing Capital International Airport, which has been the second-busiest airport since 2010, was not even in the top 30 in 2000. Dubai International Airport, the third-busiest airport as of 2015, did not enter the top 30 until 2007. On the other hand, O’Hare International Airport, which was the second-busiest airport until 2009, has hovered around 65-75 million passengers since 2000. As of 2015, O’Hare is the fourth-busiest airport in the world, after Atlanta, Beijing, and Dubai.
The regional distribution of the world’s busiest airports has also changed significantly since 2000, when 25 of the top 30 airports were located in either North America or Europe, with only 5 located in Asia. As of 2015, 18 of the top 30 airports are located in North America or Europe, with the remaining 12 located in Asia. (Though most of Turkey is located in Asia, Istanbul Atatürk Airport is technically located on the European side of Istanbul.)
Description of world's busiest airports in 2015
In 2015, twelve of the 30 busiest airports are located North America, all are in the United States. Six of the airports are located in Europe; one each in France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Turkey(Istanbul Atatürk Airport is located on the European side of Istanbul.) The rest airports are located in Asia, four are in China (including one in Hong Kong) and one each in India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.
Comparison with 2000
In 2000, eighteen of the 30 busiest airports were located in the United States, two in United Kingdom, and one each in Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, and Thailand. Thus, 12 countries had at least one airport in the top 30. By continent, nineteen were in North America, six were in Europe, and five were in Asia. The United States dominated the list of the top 30 busiest airports in 2000; not only did it have eighteen airports total and the world's busiest airport (Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport), it also had four of the top five and thirteen of the top twenty airports.
Nine airports that were in the top 30 in 2000 are no longer in the top 30 as of 2015: Boston, Detroit, London (Gatwick), Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Newark, Orlando, Seattle, St. Louis, and Toronto. Thus, between 2000 and 2015 the United States lost seven airports in the top 30, United Kingdom lost one of its two airports, and Canada lost its only airport in the top 30.
Six countries or regions that had no airports in the top 30 in 2000 have at least one airport in the top 30 as of 2015: Mainland China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Mainland China has three airports in the top 30 as of 2015: Beijing, Shanghai (Pudong), and Guangzhou.
Although South Korea and Thailand both had one airport in the top 30 in 2000, but the location are different in the top 30 in 2015. Gimpo International Airport was the main international airport for Seoul, South Korea until it was replaced by Incheon International Airport in 2001. Bangkok International Airport, now called Don Mueang International Airport, was the main international airport for Bangkok, Thailand until it was replaced by Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2006.
