California's 34th congressional district special election, 2017

A special election will be held in 2017 to determine the member of the United States House of Representatives for California's 34th congressional district. Incumbent Representative Xavier Becerra has been nominated by Governor Jerry Brown to succeed Kamala Harris, who was elected to the United States Senate, as Attorney General of California. Harris will not resign the position of Attorney General until she is sworn into the Senate on January 3, 2017.[1]

Upon the announcement of Becerra's selection, John Pérez, the former Speaker of the California State Assembly, announced his candidacy to succeed him in the House of Representatives.[1] Other potential candidates include Los Angeles City Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and José Huizar and Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez. State Senator Kevin de León and Assemblyman Miguel Santiago declined to run.[2][3]
