American Urban Radio Networks
The American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) is the result of a merger between the National Black Network, founded by Unity Broadcasting in 1973, and the Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation, founded in 1972. After becoming the first African Americans to purchase a group of radio stations (WILD, Boston, WAMO, Pittsburgh & WUFO, Buffalo), SBC purchased a 49% interest in the Mutual Black Network. In October 1979 SBC became 100% owners of Mutual Black Network, founded in 1972 by the Mutual Broadcasting System. The name was then changed to the Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN). The merger of NBN and SBN took place in 1991. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, AURN is the only African American owned network radio company in the United States. It is one of the largest networks reaching Urban America, with more than 300 weekly shows, American Urban Radio Networks reaches an estimated 25 million listeners.
AURN also has a partnership with the Sheridan Gospel Network (SGN) , a 24-hour syndicated inspirational programming network. AURN also markets and distributes the nationally syndicated Doug Banks Radio Show in afternoon drive-time. It is the only African-American broadcaster with a bureau in The White House. AURN has offices and bureaus in New York, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
