The London Night Bus network is a series of night bus routes that serve Greater London. Services broadly operate between the hours of 23:00 and 06:00.

Many services commence from or operate via Trafalgar Square and are extensions or variations of daytime routes and hence derive their number from these; for example, route N73 Victoria to Walthamstow follows that of route 73 as far as Stoke Newington, before continuing further north.[1][2][3]

History

The first night bus was introduced in 1913. A few more services were introduced over the following decades, before all ceased during World War II. Services resumed after the war, increasing as trams and trolleybuses were replaced in the late 1950s and 1960s. In April 1984, the number of routes was increased from 21 to 32. At this point the peak service required 80 buses, by August 2013 this had grown to 890.[4]

Originally the night bus network had its own fare structure, but with the introduction of the Oyster card in 2003, was incorporated into the Transport for London fare structure. Up until the mid-2000s, all routes had N prefixes. However, as some routes merely mirrored their day time equivalents, the N prefixes were dropped and these routes became 24-hour services; for example, route N14 was no longer differentiated from route 14.[4]

Services are operated by private operators under contract to London Buses. The Night Bus contracts are often bundled with that of the equivalent daytime route and awarded for a five-year period, with an optional two-year extension based on performance standards being met. Some however are tendered individually.[4][5][6]

With some London Underground lines operating a 24-hour service from August 2016 on weekends, a further eight routes commenced 24 hour operation on Friday and Saturday nights.[7] Further changes are expected as the Night Tube network is expanded.

In May 2015, the Night Bus network was the subject of The Night Bus, a Channel 4 documentary.[8][9]

Operation

Currently there are 52 night bus routes in London. There are also 72 daytime routes which run 24 hours a day.

Trafalgar Square has the highest concentration of night bus routes with 28 routes either commencing from or operating via there. Many of these routes are extensions or variations of daytime routes and derive their number from these.

Night bus routes are often related to the day numerical equivalent, normally running the same route but with an extension at either end of the service. This is normally to provide a night service to destinations served by tube or train during the day.

However, there are a few N-prefixed route numbers that have no relation to their daytime equivalents: the N5, N20 and N97 all operate in a different part of London to their respective day routes, and the N550 and N551 (which provide night service on parts of the Docklands Light Rail network) have no corresponding daytime routes.

London Buses route N1 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Thamesmead and Tottenham Court Road station, it is operated by London General.

History

Route N1 commenced operating on 28 June 1995 between Plumstead garage and Trafalgar Square. It was originally operated by London Central, being taken over by First London in November 1998. In January 2000 it was extended beyond Plumstead to Thamesmead, and in April 2000 withdrawn between Trafalgar Square and Aldwych being diverted to Tottenham Court Road station. In October 2005, the route was taken over by East Thames Buses.[4]

In October 2009, East Thames Buses was sold to London General, which included a five-year contract to operate route N1.[10][11][12]

London Buses route N2 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Crystal Palace and Trafalgar Square, it is operated by Arriva London.

History

Route N2 commenced operating on 13 April 1984 between West Norwood station and Trafalgar Square. In October 1984, it was extended north from Trafalgar Square to Friern Barnet. In June 1995, it was withdrawn between Camden Town and Friern Barnet, and rerouted to Hampstead Heath. In November 1999, the Trafalgar Square to Hampstead Heath section was withdrawn and replaced by route N24. Upon being retendered, it passed from Metroline to Arriva London in April 2000.[4]

London Buses route N3 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London. Running between Bromley North and Oxford Circus, it is operated by Abellio London.

History

Route N3 commenced operating on 27 October 1989 between Beckenham Junction station and Victoria bus station via Oxford Circus. In October 1993, it was extended to start back at Chislehurst. In May 2000, it was altered to operate between Bromley North station and Oxford Circus. It's operation also passed from London Central to Connex on the same date.[4]

Route N3 was included in the sale of Connex to Travel London in February 2004[15] which in turn was sold to Abellio London in May 2009.[16][17]

Route N7 commenced operating on 30 August 2003 between Northolt and Russell Square. It was initially operated by First London. Upon being retendered it passed to Metroline on 23 June 2007[20] who commenced a further contract on 21 June 2014.[21]

London Buses route N8 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Hainault and Tottenham Court Road station, it is operated by Stagecoach London.

History

Route N8 commenced operating on 13 August 1988 between Bow Church and Queensbury station via the City of London. In July 1992, the Marble Arch to Queensbury section was withdrawn, with the route redirected to Victoria bus station. In July 1995, it was altered to operate from Woodford Wells to Trafalgar Square. In June 1999, it once again began operating to Victoria, albeit via Piccadilly Circus. This was altered in April 2000 with it now routed via Berkley Square. In June 2004, its eastern terminus was altered to Hainault. In June 2009, it was again withdrawn between Oxford Circus and Victoria being replaced by route C2.[4]

Route N8 has been operated by East London/Stagecoach London since its inception. On 28 June 2014, a further contract commenced with New Routemasters.[23][24][25]

London Buses route N9 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Heathrow Terminal 5 and Aldwych, it is operated by London United.

History

Route N9 commenced operating on 25 February 1994 between Kingston and Trafalgar Square replacing parts of routes N65 and N92. In March 1997 it was extended from Trafalgar Square to Aldwych. In September 2001, the Hammersmith bus station to Kingston section was withdrawn and the route diverted to Heathrow Airport Central bus station, In March 2008 it was extended to the new Heathrow Terminal 5. Route N9 has been operated by London United since its inception.[4]

London Buses route N11 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is contracted to London General.

History

The route N11 started on 13 April 1984 running between Shepherds Bush Green and Liverpool Street, using two Daimler Fleetlines from Victoria Garage, these were changed to Metrobuses in July of that year. The following year, on 27 April 1985, the route was extended at both ends running between Acton Town and Hackney Central, with an increased pvr to three buses. A further extension, on the eastern end of the route, took place on 2 November from Hackney Central to Hackney Wick.

The N11 was rerouted away from Shepherd Bush to serve Turnham Green on 9 August 1986. On 28 October 1989, the allocation was split between Victoria and Shepherds Bush Garages, with one Metrobus from each, and also withdrawn between Trafalgar Square and Hackney Wick, replaced by a new route N6. The Shepherds Bush allocation was replaced with a Hounslow Garage allocation during March 1993. On the closure of Victoria Garage, during July 1993, the allocation transferred to Stockwell Garage.

The route was withdrawn from Turnham Green and returned to terminating at Shepherds Bush Green, on 26 February 1994, and also extended from Trafalgar Square back to Liverpool Street station, and rerouted as per the day route. The complete allocation was moved to Stamford Brook and transferred to Houslow once again during 1996. The allocation moved to Shepherds Bush during 1999. The route was converted to single deck in April 2000, but reverted to double deck in March 2001. The route was diverted at Hammersmith, away from Shepherds Bush, to Wembley Central on 31 March 2001.

London General gained route N11 from London United on 29 June 2003, and the route transferred to Stockwell Garage, using Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs from the day route. On 7 June 2008, the route was diverted at West Ealing to run via route 207 to terminate at Ealing Broadway, with route 297 being converted into a 24-hour service to replace the withdrawn section between Wembley Central and Argyle Road Cleveland Road.

London Buses route N13 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between North Finchley and Aldwych, it is operated by London Sovereign.

History

Night bus N13 is the night service for routes 13 and 82 between North Finchley and Aldwych. The N13 started on 13 April 1984 running via the day route 13 between Trafalgar Square and North Finchley, from Finchley Garage using Metrobuses. A few months later on 27 October the route was extended from North Finchley to Barnet Church, via the current route 263. On 18 July 1992 the route was extended in Central London to Victoria station, running via Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Westminster.

A further extension on the northern end of the route took place on 4 December 1993 when the route was transferred to Potters Bar Garage, on the closure of Finchley, and extended to Potters Bar, via Hadley Highstone, on garage journeys. A route restructing took place on 23 June 1995 when the route was transferred to Holloway Garage, being withdrawn between Potters Bar and North Finchley, and between Victoria and Trafalgar Square.

On 1 September 2001, London Sovereign commenced operating N13. The route was also extended from Trafalgar Square to Aldwych to follow the day route at the same time. London Sovereign's service on the N13 initially used a mixture of Volvo Olympians and Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs. On 22 October 2005, brand new Scania OmniDekkas were introduced.

On 31 August 2013, night route N13 was retained by London Sovereign with new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B5LHs.

London Buses route N16 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is contracted to Metroline.

History

Night bus N16 is night service for route 16 between Cricklewood & Victoria and route 32 between Edgware & Kilburn High Road.

This night route dates back at least as far as 1934, when it was numbered 294, running between Cricklewood Bus Garage and Liverpool Street station, via Marble Arch, Oxford Circus and Trafalgar Square. The route originally ran from Cricklewood Bus Garage using AEC Renown LT type double deckers. The route was then renumbered N94 in September 1960 and renumbered again to the present N16 in 1991. By 1991, the route had been extended from Cricklewood to Edgware, and was running from Edgware Bus Garage using MCW Metrobuses, reverting to Cricklewood Bus Garage in March 1993, only for the allocation to return to Edgware Garage in January 1994.

On 29 January 1994 the Trafalgar Square to Liverpool Street section was withdrawn, and the rerouted from Trafalgar Square, down Whitehall to Victoria.

In February 2001, the allocation was adjusted to be shared between Edgware and Cricklewood Bus Garages.

In October 2002, the Cricklewood allocation was again withdrawn and at the same time,the route was rerouted away from Trafalgar Square to run direct from Marble Arch via Park Lane to Victoria, following the day route 16.

In February 2005, Harrow Weald (HD) gained a weekend allocation for route N16.

On 29 June 2012, the Edgware (EW) allocation for route N16 was transferred to Cricklewood (W).

London Buses route N18 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, United Kingdom. The service is contracted to Metroline.

History

Route N18 was introduced on 13 April 1984 between Sudbury (Swan) and Aldwych via Wembley, Stonebridge Park, Harlesden, Kensal Green, Harrow Road, Royal Oak, Bishops Bridge Road, Paddington station, Praed Street, Edgware Road, Marble Arch, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square; with meal relief journeys projected to Liverpool Street via Fleet Street, Ludgate Circus, St. Paul’s and Bank. Although this was a new route, the only new section was from Craven Park to Sudbury as the N91 already operated between Willesden Garage and Liverpool Street via Craven Park. Garage journeys ran in service over route 260. In April 1985 the route was extended from Sudbury to Edgware over portions of routes 182 and 286, but withdrawn between Trafalgar Square and Aldwych except for the meal break projection. In August the meal relief journeys were diverted to Waterloo, running over Waterloo Bridge. After the break buses ran light to Liverpool Street and then on times as before. In September 1987 certain journeys were diverted to Watford Junction via Bushey Heath and Watford (serving route 142), diverging at Stanmore Broadway after “double running” past Stanmore station. In October 1989 the meal relief point was changed to Victoria. At the end of January 1994 the service was withdrawn between Harrow Weald (Red Lion) and Watford. In February 2001, the route was rerouted direct via Harrow Road, instead of serving Paddington station. In 2003 the N18 was rerouted via Marylebone Road, Great Portland Street and runs across Oxford Street, instead of through it.

The N18 had always been based at the Westbourne Park garage on a contract to First London, using double deckers. But in June 2007, when route N7 was lost to Metroline which created space at Alperton (ON), so route N18 (with a higher PVR) swapped garages with route N10.

In November 2010, route N18 was transferred to Willesden Junction (WJ).

On 22 June 2013, the operation of route N18 was transferred to Metroline.

History

Route N20, like route N5, is a special night service for the Northern line between Charing Cross and High Barnet station(except it does not directly serve Totteridge & Whetstone, Woodside Park, Mill Hill East or West Finchley station).

The route was initially numbered N1 and began operating on the morning of 28 October 1989 running from High Barnet to Charing Cross and then via the Strand to terminate at the Aldwych. Some journeys diverted via Whitehall and Westminster to Victoria station. (Returning via Victoria Embankment and Arundel Street before continuing from Aldwych). The section between Aldwych and Trafalgar Square (Charing Cross) was withdrawn on 18 July 1992. The journeys to Victoria were withdrawn on 24 June 1995, when the route was renumbered N20, as the number N1 was needed for the night service of the day route 1.

The route was run from Holloway (HT) using MCW Metrobuses, until 24 June 1995 when a single bus Potters Bar allocation was introduced. The weekend service was increased in 1997 and the allocations were increased. On 15 July 1998 the route was transferred to Northumberland Park bus garage to be operated by First London using Leyland Olympians. On 8 January 2000 extra Friday/Saturday night journeys were added between Trafalgar Square and Finchley Central. After 5 years with First, on 25 August 2003, the route transferred back to Potters Bar with Metroline, and the extra journeys were extended from Finchley Central to High Barnet. The route returned to Holloway (HT) during February 2005, when a weekend night allocation was introduced.

History

Night Bus Route N21 is the night service for route 21 between Bank and Lewisham, and - until 10 October 2009 - for route 233 between Eltham and Foots Cray, for route 51 between Blackfen and Foots Cray and for route 321 between New Cross Gate and Eltham and Sidcup (Police station) and Foots Cray.

The N21 was introduced to provide a night service over the original route 21 between Central London and Sidcup (Foots Cray), but with a deviation via Avery Hill and Blackfen, to serve the University of Greenwich, which provides the route with steady patronage between there and Central London (not just at weekends either). It originally operated from Victoria to Foots Cray via its current routing but on Friday and Saturday Nights some journeys ran via New Eltham and Mottingham, terminating at Sidcup. In 1999 the route was re-structured again with the extra weekend journeys via New Eltham being revised to operate from Eltham to Chislehurst via Mottingham and was introduced to run every night (not just weekends). The original service to Foots Cray via Blackfen and Sidcup remained unchanged. Changes to the frequency meant buses running every 30 minutes between Victoria and Eltham then every 60 mins to Chislehurst and Foots Cray respectively.

In 2002, another re-structure saw the Chislehurst Journeys withdrawn and run through to Foots Cray. Instead, providing a 30 min service over the whole route. The route was also shortened to start and terminate at Trafalgar Square as opposed to Victoria. On Friday and Saturday nights, patronage was such that extras were introduced between Eltham High Street and Trafalgar Square, combined with the Foots Cray Buses providing a 15-minute service over that section of route. With the withdrawal of the Chislehurst Services, Mottingham and Chislehurst were without a night bus route until Feb 2008 when the N136 was introduced (replacing parts of the N36).

The route was further amended on 10 October 2009, being withdrawn between Blackfen and Sidcup, instead running to Bexleyheath via Blendon, Bridgen and Old Bexley along the established day route 132. The Night service to Sidcup was simultaneously replaced by a 24-hour service on route 321, restoring a night service to New Eltham after an absence of 10 years.

Route N26 began operating in July 1992 as a replacement for the eastern section of the withdrawn N6. It ran between Victoria and Walthamstow Central stationvia Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Aldwych, Fleet Street, Ludgate Circus, Mansion House, Bank, Liverpool Street, Shoreditch, Hackney Road, Cambridge Heath, Hackney, Morning Lane, Hackney Wick, Ruckholt Road, Leyton High Road and Bakers Arms. In 1995 it was withdrawn between Trafalgar Square and Victoria, but extended from Walthamstow Central to Walthamstow (Fulbourne Road) via Church Hill and Shernhall Street. Unofficially, the route went to Crooked Billet, which was the destination shown on the blind. In 2001 the route was withdrawn between Walthamstow Central and Fulbourne Road, but extended to Chingford stationvia Crooked Billet, Chingford Mount and The Ridgeway to replace route N38 which was curtailed at Walthamstow Central. At the same time it was also diverted between Mare Street, Hackney, and Leyton Town Hall via Well Street instead of Morning Lane, and Clays Lane instead of direct via Ruckholt Road. On 25 June 2011, First London gained commenced operating route N26 with new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s.

On 22 June 2013, the operation of route N26 was transferred to Tower Transit.

History

The original route N68 was introduced in the 1970s, and ran between Wandsworth (Armoury Way) and Farringdon Street via Clapham Junction, Lavender Hill, Vauxhall, Millbank, Parliament Square, Trafalgar Square and Aldwych. It replaced the night service on route 168, and was the last night route to be introduced before the major enhancement of the night bus network during the 1980s, when a great many more routes were introduced. The N68 had the meal relief journeys to Liverpool Street “livened up” in 1975, and was diverted to run via Strand and Aldwych instead of Victoria Embankment during the 1970s. It is mainly covered now by route N87, and today’s N68 covers day routes 68, 468 and 60.

History

The N87 was a long-standing night-route with its origins as an all-night tram service. Introduced as route 287 after the withdrawal of the trams in 1952, it ran in both directions around a circular route in a figure of “8” from Victoria Embankment via Westminster, Kennington, Balham, Clapham, Tooting, Streatham, Brixton, Stockwell, Kennington, Elephant & Castle and Blackfriars back to Victoria Embankment. It was re-numbered N87 in 1960 in order to free up its original number for the new bus routes which were replacing the trolleybus services from the late 1950s. In later years it was rerouted to serve Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, Strand and Fleet Street instead of Victoria Embankment. Buses ran both ways around the loops every 24 minutes, which in those days made it the most frequent (and regular) night bus. It was replaced in the mid-1990s by a number of other routes when the re-organisation and enhancement of the night bus network took place, and is now covered mainly by the 88, today’s N44 and the N133. On 3 June 2006, route N77 was renumbered N87. At the same time route N87 was withdrawn between Kingston and Tolworth.

History

Route N89 was renumbered from 289 in 1960. It ran from London Bridge station to Southall (Brent Road) via Bank, Holborn, Oxford Street, Marble Arch, Lancaster Gate/Notting Hill Gate, Shepherds Bush, Acton, Ealing and Hanwell. It was later diverted between Marble Arch and Lancaster Gate to serve Paddington station. In 1976 the journeys that ran out of service to Liverpool Street were changed to run in service, and so at Bank some journeys ran to Liverpool Street instead of London Bridge, meaning that at that point the N89 ran in three different directions. In 1981 the route was diverted at Southall Town Hall to run to Uxbridge via Hayes End and Hillingdon. The route was absorbed mainly by route N207, running between Holborn and Uxbridge.

Route N89 was introduced in 2003 when it replaced the withdrawn N81 between Trafalgar Square and Bexleyheath. Night bus N81 ran between Victoria station and Bexleyheath. Throughout its existence as a South East London Night Route, the N81 had many projections and diversions, at one stage running as far as Dartford and Gillingham. The Route was then curtailed to Crayford for a short period of time before finally being cut back further to Bexleyheath. The N81 Generally followed the same routeing between Victoria and Bexleyheath, despite the changes.

The N89 runs from Trafalgar Square over most of the old N81 routing to Bexleyheath and was extended onwards to Erith via Slade Green, over the then 89 and 469 route's. The Erith Extension was introduced to prevent idling buses causing a nuisance to Slade Green residents, as well as providing a 'useful' connection. Between Lewisham and Slade Green the N89 matched the daytime 89 route, so the renumbering from N81 to N89 reflected this. The Erith extension also enabled route N53 to be curtailed at Plumstead, later to be replaced by the 53 becoming a 24-hour service between Plumstead and Whitehall only. The Thamesmead services on the N53 were replaced by an extension of the N1. With the loss of the N53 Between Plumstead and Erith, the Lesnes Heath and Upper Belvedere areas became deprived of a night bus Service, whereby other nearby areas of Northumberland Heath, North End and Slade Green—all previously unserved—gained a Night Bus with the introduction of the N89.

Night bus N89 is London's longest at 34-kilometre (21 mi) length, closely followed by the N9 at 33 kilometres (21 miles).

On 28 January 2012, night bus N89 was retained by London Central with new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s.

It ran between Liverpool Street and Willesden Garage via Bank, St. Paul’s, Ludgate Circus, Fleet Street, Strand, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, Marble Arch, Edgware Road, Harrow Road and Harlesden. It was subsequently rerouted to serve Paddington station, and the route now forms part of today’s route 6 which runs 24 hours.

The present route N91 is the night service for route 91 between Trafalgar Square and Crouch End, and the Piccadilly line between Holborn and Cockfosters, albeit not serving Holloway Road, Arsenal, Finsbury Park, and Manor House stations. Passengers can then continue their journey using night routes N97 to Hammersmith and N9 to Heathrow Airport Central. There is currently no night service for the Uxbridge branch.

Night Bus Route N97 has the distinction of being the shortest dedicated Night Bus Route at only 6 miles (9.7 km) long. However, the route began as the 297 in October 1934 (itself being renumbered from route 614) and ran between Liverpool Street and Turnham Green. It was renumbered as N97 in 1960. It ran between Liverpool Street and Turnham Green Garage via Bank, St. Paul’s, Ludgate Circus, Fleet Street, Strand, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Green Park, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, South Kensington, Fulham Broadway, Dawes Road, Hammersmith and Stamford Brook. It was subsequently rerouted to serve Earl’s Court. In 1977, when the Piccadilly line was extended to Heathrow, the N97 underwent a major change when it was extended to Heathrow Airport via Chiswick, Gunnersbury, Brentford, Isleworth, Hounslow, Hounslow West, Cranford and Harlington Corner, and at the same time was introduced on Saturday night/Sunday morning and substantially increased in frequency.

The route is primarily used as a night replacement for the Piccadilly line between Piccadilly Circus and Hammersmith stations. Passengers can then continue their journey using night routes N91 (to Cockfosters) or N9 (to Heathrow). There is currently no night service for the Uxbridge branch. Operation of the route passed from London United to Tower Transit on 5 March 2016.[29]

History

Route N98 was introduced in 1960 when the night buses were renumbered with an “N” prefix from the 2×× series, and so the 298 became N98. It ran from Trafalgar Square to Hornchurch Garage via Tottenham Court Road station, Holborn, St. Paul’s, Bank, Aldgate, Stepney Green, Mile End, Bow, Stratford, Forest Gate, Manor Park, Ilford, Seven Kings, Chadwell Heath, Romford and Roneo Corner. The Hornchurch extension was cut back to Romford station, but some journeys were extended from Trafalgar Square to Victoria via Westminster for crews’ meal reliefs. It was one of the few night routes in the early days to run on Saturday night, but the service only came into central London as far as Holborn. The Trafalgar Square to Oxford Circus section was withdrawn in 2003, with no replacement, and instead rerouted to Holborn Red Lion Square. The original service now forms part of 24-hour route 25.

Night bus N98 runs a night service for route 98 between Holborn and Willesden, and then continues to Stanmore via Kingsbury and Neasden as a night service for the Northern end of the Jubilee line. The route is structured so that every other bus runs beyond Willesden to Stanmore.

The route was also on a contract to First London, operating from Alperton (ON), using Leyland Olympians and MCW Metrobuses. In 2003, the allocation was transferred to Metroline, operating from Willesden (AC) and Edgware (EW), using Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.

In June 2013, Alexander Dennis Enviro400s were introduced.

History

The original N171 route ran from Tottenham Court Road to Hither Green station. In 2006, the route was changed to terminate at Catford Bus Garage instead of Hither Green, and so mirror the day 171 route.

On 25 June 2010, a consultation was held, proposing to reintroduce the service to Hither Green. On 30 April 2011, following the consultation, the N171 was rerouted to Hither Green station.[31]

Route N205 was introduced on 31 August 2013, to replace the night service on 24-hour route 205. History

N207 replaced the former night bus N89, which ran from Uxbridge station to Victoria station, in 2001. It was then rerouted to Aldwych, and in 2005 it was rerouted again to Holborn. Night bus N207's Acton allocation was transferred to Hayes in March 2008. On 29 May 2010, route N207 was temporarily withdrawn between Holborn to Oxford Circus.

On 22 June 2013, the operation of route N207 was transferred to Metroline.

History

Night bus N279 is the night service for route 279 between Waltham Cross and Manor House station, it then continues to Trafalgar Square via Holloway, Camden, Warren Street, Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square. It previously continued to Victoria. Back in 1998, there were journeys continuing out into the countryside to Upshire. Route N279 is the only London night bus route terminating outside the Greater London boundary.

It once ran via St Pancras, King's Cross & Euston but due to Pancras Road being a one way system it was rerouted via Eversholt Street and Hampstead Road in 2006.

On 15 October 2011, night route N279 was retained by Arriva London with new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s.
