Barabani (community development block) is an administrative division in Asansol subdivision of Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Barabani and Asansol (North) police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Domohani Bazar. Pangachhiya and Bhanowara are urban areas in this block.[1][2] It is a suburb of Asansol. DR. Geography
Barabani is located at 23°45′25″N 87°01′30″E / 23.757°N 87.025°E.
Barabani community development block has an area of 150.50 km2.[2]
Asansol is composed of undulating laterite soil. This area lies between two rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared.[3]
Nunia, a small stream about 40 km long has its origin near Adra village in the Salanpur area, flows through the Barabani area, past Asansol and joins the Damodar in the Raniganj area.[4]

Demographics
As per 2001 census, Barabani block had a total population of 110,361, out of which 57,735 were males and 52,626 were females. Barabani block registered a population growth of 9.97 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Bardhaman district was 14.36 per cent.[2] Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[6]
Scheduled castes at 34,630 formed around one-third the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 16,905.[7]
Literacy
As per 2001 census, Barabani block had a total literacy of 63.57 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 75.99 per cent female literacy was 49.88 per cent. Bardhaman district had a total literacy of 70.18 per cent, male literacy being 78.63 per cent and female literacy being 60.95 per cent.[8]
Economy
Barabani is in the heart of the Raniganj Coalfields of Eastern Coalfields Limited., under Coal India Limited. Illegal mining is rampant in the area. Barabani has around 23 illegal ‘bhattas’ (ovens) processing and selling coal.[9]
Transport
There is a rail track: Andal-Sonachara-Tapasi-Ikra-Jamuria-Barabani-Chinchuria-Sitarampur,[10](See Andal-Sainthia Branch Line for route map details). Passenger trains were stopped on this section from 1998[11] but the transport system was restarted in the month of April, 2011. Only one local train facility is available.
