Titagarh is a city and a municipality in north Kolkata, formerly Calcutta. It is a part of Titagarh Municipality under Barrackpore sub-division and Kolkata city of the state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.^[2]

Titagarh is located at 22°44′N 88°22′E / 22.74°N 88.37°E.^[3] It has an average elevation of 15 metres (49 feet).

It is served by the Kolkata Suburban Railway system.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,^[4] Titagarh had a population of 118,426. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Titagarh has an average literacy rate of 81.18%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is 86.87%, and female literacy is 74.42%. In Titagarh, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Jute Mills drew in a large labour force from the neighboring states of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, as well as eastern Uttar Pradesh, forming an overwhelming majority of the population in the area, living in shanty towns and bustees dotting the mill area. The proportion of migrants in the population was a stunning 90% in Titagarh ^[5]

Politics

Adv. Sil Bhadra Dutta of TMC won the Barrackpore Assembly seat in 2011, defeating Dr. Madhu Samanta of CPI(M). Pravin Kumar Shaw of CPI(M) defeated Ashok Shukla of Trinamool Congress in 2001 and of Indian National Congress in 1996, as well as Ganga Prasad Sha of the Indian National Congress in 1991. Ganga Prasad Sha of Congress defeated Mohammed Amin of CPI (M) in 1987 and 1982. Mohammad Amin of CPI (M) defeated Ganga Prasad Sha of Congress in 1977.^[6]

Economy

The Titagarh Paper Mills were set up at Titagarh and Kakinara in 1882.^[7] The group consisted of two paper mills in West Bengal, along with several jute mills and other associated factories, including Kinnison Jute MIll, Titagarh Jute MIll No. 2, Standard Jute Mill, Empire Jute Mill, George Salter India, Britannia Engineering Works, a CESC generating station, and other facilities, most of which were located in Titagarh, and at one time held under and governed by a single managing agency. The Titagarh Paper Mills, long established as India's leading manufacturer of specialty papers, currency note paper, and newsprint, produced a total of 38,550 tons of paper in 1947.^[8] The paper production facilities were extensively modernized and expanded between 1966 and 1974, to keep pace with the demands of India's burgeoning post-Independence press, and a third, leading-edge, paper mill of the TPM group was developed in Choudwar, Orissa, but the third paper mill was later sold to Ballarpur Industries Ltd.^[9] The successor of Titagarh Paper Mills is Titagarh Industries Ltd.,^[10] located in Kolkata and formed as an umbrella organization, which in 1994 acquired Titagarh Paper Mills and its related facilities in West Bengal. The diversified company now includes Titagarh Paper Mills,^[11] Titagarh Wagons Ltd.,^[12] Titagarh Steels,^[13] and, in other locations, Continental Valves, TIL Valves, Tecalemit Industries Ltd., and Panihati Rubber Ltd.
