Suri I (community development block) (Bengali: সিউড়ি I সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Suri Sadar subdivision of Birbhum district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Suri and Sadaipur police stations serve this block. Headquarters of this block is at Barabagan.[1][2]

Geography

Karidhya, a constituent panchayat of Suri I block, is located at 23°54′39″N 87°29′38″E / 23.9107°N 87.4939°E / 23.9107; 87.4939.

Suri I community development block has an area of 155.38  km2.[2] The other blocks surrounding this block are MD.Bazaar, Sainthia, Suri II, Dubrajpur, Rajnagar of West Bengal and Ranishwar block of Jharkhand.

Gram panchayats of Suri I block/panchayat samiti are: Alunda, Bhurkuna, Karidhya, Khatanga, Mallikpur, Nagari and Tilpara.[3]

Demographics

As per 2001 census, Suri I block had a total population of 96,485, out of which 49,942 were males and 46,543 were females. Suri I block registered a population growth of 24.61 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Birbhum district was 17.88 per cent.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[4]

Scheduled castes at 35,711 formed around one-third the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 8,874.[5]

Literacy

As per 2001 census, Suri I block had a total literacy of 62.54 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 72.33 per cent female literacy was 51.96 per cent. Birbhum district had a total literacy of 61.48 per cent, male literacy being 70.89 per cent and female literacy being 51.55 per cent.[6]

Economy

Bakreshwar Thermal Power Station is located partly in Suri I block.[7]
