Pot farming

Tomato plants growing in a pot farming alongside a small house in New Jersey in fifteen garbage cans filled with soil, grew over 700 tomatoes during the summer.

Pot farming, flowerpot farming or pot agriculture is the practice of growing edible plants, exclusively in containers (flowerpots), instead of planting them in the ground.[1]

The balcony, backyard, patio or even the doorstep can all be turned over to vegetable production.[2]

Species

It is important to select appropriate species to ensure success in the urban garden. Species such as parsley, tomato, spinach or arugula can even be grown inside the house, if there is adequate light and ventilation. In outdoor terraces, options include basil, rosemary, thyme, dill, oregano, carrots, radish, anise, cidron, mint, among others. Special care must be taken to grow these plants in pots. This practice is associated with trends as Zero Kilometers, where the consumption of local vegetables is encouraged, to reduce carbon emissions related transporting food.
