Sundaram Medical Foundation

Sundaram Medical Foundation (also referred to as SMF or Dr. Rangarajan Memorial Hospital) is a community-centered, non-profit, trust hospital founded in 1994 by the late Dr. Santhanam Rangarajan. The institution's vision is to provide 'quality care which is community centered at affordable prices'. Sundaram Medical Foundation offers multi-specialty medical care, including 24-hour ambulance service and emergency room facilities, and specialities such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Dental, Family Medicine, Orthopedics and Psychiatry.[1]

Sundaram Medical Foundation offers medical education[2] in nine post-graduate disciplines under the National Board of Examinations (through which Dip.NB is awarded). SMF maintains community health initiatives[3] including CANSTOP,[4] a cancer-care NGO dedicated to the memory of Dr. S. Rangarajan, educational programs for local residents in diabetes, hypertension and asthma (named STEP programs) and others.[5]

SMF is accredited according to the standards of ISO:9001:2008 and is accredited as NABL: 15189:2007 for laboratory services in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Clinical Pathology and Histopathology as well as being the first hospital in India to be certified with ISO/ IEC 27001:2005 – Information Security Management.[6]

Sundaram Medical Foundation has been supported since inception by the Sundaram Finance Group (a TVS group company).[7] Dr. S. Rangarajan, the founder of the hospital, died in 1997 after battling cancer.[8] After his death, Sundaram Medical Foundation additionally incorporated the name 'Dr. Rangarajan Memorial Hospital'.

According to an Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad case study[9] "SMF is a secondary care medical facility created to provide quality health care at an affordable price (or value for money) to the middle class Indian population. This facility is a realization of the passion of the founder to provide quality health care at affordable price to the middle income group population."

Sundaram Medical Foundation's main hospital premises is at 9C Shanthi Colony, 4th Avenue, Anna Nagar, Chennai 600 040. SMF also operates a surgical center in New Avadi road, Kilpauk and an outpatient facility at "Karuna Conclave" also on Shanthi Colony, 4th Avenue, Anna Nagar.
