Semen Padang F.C. is an Indonesian professional football club, based in Indarung, Padang, West Sumatra. They play in the Indonesia Soccer Championship A. The club was established on 30 November 1980.
History
Semen Padang Football Club is a professional football club founded at 30 November 1980 by Mr. Azwar Anas and owned by PT. Semen Padang, which is the oldest cement companies in Indonesia. This football club based in Indarung, Padang, West Sumatra and called Kabau Sirah or Red Bull. Before the creation of Liga Indonesia, as a professional club owned by a company, they competed at Galatama. Their first title was winning the Piala Galatama on 1992, by a vital goal from Delfi Adri into Arema Malang net, thus qualified them for their first appearances at Asia level, the 1993–94 Asian Cup Winners' Cup. At that competition, they fought until reach the quarter-final.
Semen Padang FC also known as Indonesia's team which combined local talent from Sumatra, mixed with Papua. One of memorable moment in 2002, when they went into 2002 Liga Indonesia Premier Division before defeated by champion's Petrokimia Putra in penalty shoot-out. At that season, coach Suhatman Imam brought Ellie Aiboy, Paulus Krey, Erol Iba (all of them were former of Papua 2000 Pekan Olahraga Nasional Football team), and blend them with local talent such as Hengky Ardiles, Rommy Diaz Putra, Nico Susanto, Kusdiyanto, Effendi Ibrahim, and flamboyan goalkeeper Zulkarnain Zakaria. In their journey, they beat favorite team such as Persija Jakarta, PSM Makassar, Barito Putra, Arema Malang, Persib Bandung, and their nemesis, PSMS Medan.
PSSI conflict constrain Indonesia's football competition separated into Indonesian Premier League and Indonesia Super League. Semen Padang FC choose Indonesian Premier League as their open-play competition. Within well preparation, smart-management, and internal harmonic relationship, the team went to gain their first league title in 2011–12 Indonesian Premier League. Once again, Papua's collaboration such as Ellie Aiboy, Vendry Mofu, Yosua Pahabol, and Titus Bonai mixed into main instrumental team machine, besides clinical striker Edward Junior Wilson, agile goalkeeper Jandia Eka Putra, vice-skipper Hengky Ardiles, and Argentine winger playmaker Esteban Vizcarra. This title also bring them into 2013 AFC Cup competition, and defeated by East Bengal 2–1 in quarter-final.
Stadium
Semen Padang FC currently have a stadium, which has about 12.000 seats. This stadium was named Haji Agus Salim Stadium, an intellectual and a national hero from the local Muslim Minangkabau. The stadium also used for Rugby matches from 2009 until 2012.[1]
Rivalries
Semen Padang have a very tough competitor in the league, Sriwijaya, since the beginning of the Indonesia Super League. Their meeting usually called derby kalasik (classical derby). This game is also often called the Sumatra Derby. Another fierce competitor are PSMS Medan and PSPS Pekanbaru.
