The Fabric of Saint Peter is an institute of the Roman Catholic Church responsible for preserving and decorating St. Peter's Basilica and minding the behavior of pilgrims and employees on the premises. While it is not part of the Roman Curia, the 1988 apostolic constitution Pastor bonus recognizes it as "closely associated with the Holy See."^[1] The Fabric has existed under various names, and with varying responsibilities, since 1523, when Pope Clement VII established a committee to build and administer the Basilica.
