The 2016 United States presidential election in New Mexico was held on November 8, 2016, as part of the 2016 General Election in which all 50 states plus The District of Columbia participate. New Mexico voters will choose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote.

On June 7, 2016, New Mexico voters expressed their preferences for the Democratic and Republican parties' respective nominees for President. Registered members of each party may only vote in their party's primary, while voters who are unaffiliated were unable to vote.

Hillary Clinton won the state of New Mexico by a margin of 8.3 percentage points, carrying the state's 5 electoral votes. The state had long been considered leaning Democratic, or a state Hillary Clinton would win, due to its large population of Hispanic/Latino and Native American voters. This is the third time since 1912, when New Mexico attained statehood, that the state voted for a candidate who did not win the electoral college. New Mexico voted for the electoral college runner-up in 1976 and 2000. Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson achieved 9% in his home state, his best performance of any state in the 2016 election.

Republican primary

Twelve candidates appeared on the Republican presidential primary ballot:

In April 2016, CNN believed Ted Cruz had a better shot of winning New Mexico, until he refused to campaign there as he was eliminated from reaching the magic number of 1,237, as he also refused to campaign in Oregon. That gave John Kasich a large chance of winning the state. However, on May 3, Trump won every single delegate in Indiana, prompting Cruz and Kasich to drop out of the race.

In the end, while Donald Trump won every single delegate from New Mexico in the hot seat primary, the threshold for delegates was actually 15%.
